Usually a label has to convey the following: name of the product, the manufacturer\u2019s name and address, net weight, serving size, list of ingredients and nutrition information per serving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the United States, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food and Drug Administration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requires the following data to be clearly stated on a packaged food label:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Name of the product<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The manufacturer\u2019s or distributor\u2019s name and address<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The weight of the product<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ingredients (listed according to amount, from highest to lowest)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Number of servings per product, and serving size<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calories<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Total fat, cholesterol, sodium, protein, carbohydrates)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamins and minerals (vitamin D, potassium, iron and calcium)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any artificial flavor or preservative added<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBest before\u201d date indication<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The list of ingredients has to include any allergy-causing food. Eight most common food allergens are: peanuts, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, eggs and milk, and their presence in a food product has to be made known.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your label also needs to include a barcode.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA and USDA: The Main Labeling Regulatory Bodies in the US<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA regulates labeling for most packaged food products, but meat, poultry and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/foodsafety.merieuxnutrisciences.com\/2018\/06\/28\/understanding-key-usda-fda-food-labeling-differences-part-one\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some other products containing meat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are regulated by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). Those products need to include additional information, such as: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspection legend<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signature line<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safe handling instructions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Food and Drug Administration also oversees the use of specific claims regarding some other, mostly health, information. Claims such as \u201c100% organic,\u201d \u201cfat free\u201d, \u201clow calorie\u201d etc. have to follow standard definitions by the FDA, USDA or meet strict criteria of regulatory bodies that issue labels with certain claims. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if you want to label your product with information about organic ingredients, you have to follow strict guidelines by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ams.usda.gov\/rules-regulations\/organic\/organic-seal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US Department of Agriculture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you want to show consumers that your product is \u201clow calorie\u201d, one serving cannot contain more than 40 calories. There are countless rules for proper labeling.
